Construction and Materials
Goodfellow offers a diverse range of lumber and engineered wood products designed for various construction and woodworking applications. Their product categories span from traditional hardwoods and softwoods to advanced engineered wood solutions like I-Joists and Glulam beams, as well as panel products such as MDF and Particleboard. They also provide specialty wood items, timbers, and treated lumber for specific project needs.
The construction and materials used in Goodfellow's lumber and engineered wood products vary significantly depending on the specific item. For instance:
- Hardwoods and Softwoods: These are typically solid wood materials sourced from various tree species, processed into standard lumber dimensions. Their construction involves cutting logs into planks and beams, which are then dried and graded for strength and quality. The materials are natural wood fibers, characterized by their grain patterns and inherent strength properties.
- Engineered Wood Products (I-Joists, Glulam): These products are manufactured by bonding together wood strands, veneers, or lumber pieces using adhesives.
- I-Joists are constructed with an 'I' shape, featuring flanges (typically made of solid lumber or laminated veneer lumber - LVL) and a web (made of oriented strand board - OSB or plywood). This design optimizes material use for high strength-to-weight ratios.
- Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) is made by layering and bonding together dimension lumber with structural adhesives. This process creates large, strong structural members capable of spanning significant distances.
- Panel Products (MDF, Particleboard, OSB, Plywood): These are composite wood materials made by combining wood fibers, particles, or veneers with binders and pressure.
- MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is made from wood fibers combined with wax and resin binder, pressed into panels under high temperature and pressure.
- Particleboard is manufactured from wood particles (such as wood chips or sawdust) mixed with resin or other suitable binders, which are then pressed and extruded or cast.
- OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is constructed from cross-oriented layers of rectangular wood strands or wafers that are bonded together with adhesives using heat and pressure.
- Plywood is made by gluing together thin sheets of wood veneer, called plies or lamellas, with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another.
- Beams and Timbers: These can refer to solid sawn lumber or engineered wood products, depending on the specific application and material specification. They are designed for structural load-bearing purposes.
- Treated Lumber: This refers to lumber that has been chemically treated to resist decay, fungi, and insects. The construction involves pressure treating the wood with specific preservatives.
- Specialty Wood: This category likely includes unique wood species or custom-milled lumber, where the specific materials and construction methods would depend on the individual product's nature.
The selection of materials and construction techniques employed by Goodfellow ensures that their lumber and engineered wood products meet the demanding requirements of the construction industry, providing solutions for framing, structural support, finishing, and various other applications.

Construction and Materials
Universal Forest Products (UFP) offers a comprehensive range of lumber and engineered wood products, serving diverse construction and industrial needs. Their product line encompasses various categories, including hardwoods, softwoods, Oriented Strand Board (OSB), lumber, treated lumber, and plywood.
The construction and materials utilized in UFP's offerings are fundamentally wood-based, processed and engineered to meet specific performance requirements. The type of wood and the manufacturing process vary significantly depending on the product category:
- Hardwoods: These are dense, strong woods sourced from deciduous trees. They are typically used for applications requiring durability, aesthetic appeal, and high structural integrity, such as furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and millwork.
- Softwoods: Sourced from coniferous trees, softwoods are generally lighter and less dense than hardwoods. They are widely used in construction for framing, sheathing, and general carpentry due to their availability, workability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Oriented Strand Board (OSB): OSB is an engineered wood panel product manufactured from cross-aligned strands of wood. These strands are bonded together with synthetic resins under heat and pressure. The cross-directional arrangement of the wood strands provides OSB with strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability, making it a popular choice for sheathing, subflooring, and roofing.
- Lumber: This is a broad category encompassing sawn wood used in construction and manufacturing. It includes dimensional lumber, beams, and posts, typically derived from both softwood and hardwood species. The processing involves cutting logs into planks, boards, and timbers of various sizes and grades.
- Treated Lumber: This type of lumber has undergone a chemical treatment process to enhance its resistance to decay, fungi, and insect infestation. Common treatments involve pressure-impregnating the wood with preservatives. Treated lumber is essential for applications exposed to moisture, such as outdoor decks, fences, docks, and structural elements in ground contact.
- Plywood: Plywood is an engineered wood panel made from thin sheets of wood veneer, called plies, that are glued together with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another. This cross-graining provides superior strength, stability, and resistance to warping and shrinking compared to solid lumber. Plywood is used extensively in construction for subflooring, wall sheathing, roofing, and concrete formwork.
UFP's commitment to quality and innovation is reflected in their diverse portfolio of wood products, catering to a wide spectrum of industry demands.
